Tanah Lot Temple

Tanah Lot temple is a most visit tourist spot in Bali. This temple is one of Bali’s most sacred sea temples and probably most photographed. Tanah Lot temple is situated in Tabanan and one of the most famous Hindu temples in Bali. It has been a part of Balinese mythology for centuries. In addition the temple is one of 7 sea temples. Each within eyesight of the next to form a chain along the south-western coast of Bali.

Historically Tanah Lot Temple is said to be the work of a 15^th century priest called Nirartha. On his travel along Bali south coast he found this beautiful spot and rested there for the night. Then in the morning he instructed local fishermen to build a holy place where the Balinese Sea Gods could be worshiped.

Inside the actual temple compound itself there are tier shrines that follow the fundamental element of Balinese design. However only certain Balinese people about to perform the ritual prayer or religious activities are allow to entry into the Temple. Visitor are only allow to observe from outside. Crowds especially gather on the terraces nearby to watch the glow of the sunset behind the temple.
